Herniated (Bulging) Disc
Helping You Understand the Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments to Help Relieve You of Pain
What is a Herniated (Bulging) Disc?

A herniated disc means that there is a problem with one of the discs (a rubbery cushion) between the vertebrae (individual spinal bones). Spinal discs have a soft center that is surrounded by a tough exterior and when the soft center gets pushed out through a tear in the exterior, it is known as a herniated disc or a ruptured disc. Bulging disc is another term used to refer to a herniated disc.
Many people associate herniated/bulging discs with a need for surgery. The threat of surgery can be scary, as the cost is very high and recovery can be quite painful. Cornerstone Chiropractic offers a highly specialized, state-of-the-art option to potentially avoid surgery- Spinal Decompression Therapy.

HERNIATED (BULGING) DISCS
Causes
Most herniated (bulging) discs are the result of an excessive strain or injury, such as those resulting from a car accident. However, disc material degenerates as we grow older. This degeneration can lead to minor motions causing a herniated (bulging) disc.
Symptoms
Although the symptoms may vary from one person to the next, the most common symptoms of a herniated disc may include:
• Pain in your leg or arm
• Tingling or numbness
• Muscle Weakness
Treatment
There are many treatments available to help ease the discomfort associated with a herniated disc. Chiropractic care involves non-invasive and drug-free treatments that may include physical therapy, massage and/or spinal manipulations.

WHAT CAN I DO AT HOME?
A minor herniated/bulging disc can be handled at home using some of the following remedies:
• Application of hot or cold packs to effected area
• Limiting your physical activity
• Use of over-the-counter pain relievers.

ADVANCED TREATMENT
If chiropractic adjustments are not accomplishing the best results, we offer the state-of-the-art spinal decompression therapy. Spinal decompression is a computer guided therapy that will gently manipulate the spine and surrounding areas to relieve pressure and pain. This is a highly effective alternative to a discectomy for a herniated disc.
