Sciatica Care

Specialized Chiropractic Care to Help Relieve You of Sciatica Pain

How Can Sciatica Care Help You?

Do you experience pain on one side of your lower body, extending from the lower back, through the back of the thigh, and down through the leg? If so, you are likely experiencing symptoms of sciatica. As many as four of every ten adults develop sciatic pain during their lifetimes. Patients with this condition who visit us can achieve relief with natural therapies offered by our chiropractor and potentially avoid medication or surgery.

Although sciatica is very common, there are many misconceptions about it. Many people don’t know sciatica is a condition, but believe it is a symptom of an underlying disorder. The majority of people think that surgery is the only way to relieve sciatica induced pain, and don’t consider the positive effects of chiropractic treatment.

Sciatica Care: How It Works

Examination

Sciatica is only diagnosed after our doctor completes a comprehensive physical exam that includes assessing the patient’s health history. In some cases, imaging from X-rays, CT scans, or MRI's is helpful.

Treatment

Adjustments, also known as spinal manipulations, are the primary therapy for sciatica. They return misaligned spinal components to their respective natural and correct positions. Adjustments help reduce nerve irritability.

Wellness Management

The doctor will work with you to establish habits and lifestyle changes that may be helpful to improving your injury. A good wellness program can help maintain spinal health and maintain a positive mental state.

Causes of Sciatic Nerve Compression

Patients experience compression from a number of factors, such as:
• Herniated discs
• Bone spurs
• Spinal stenosis
• Misaligned vertebrae
• Sitting in an abnormal position over an extended time

Advanced Spine Treatment Options

If chiropractic adjustments are not accomplishing the best results,we offer the state-of-the-art spinal decompression therapy. This is a computer guided therapy that will gently manipulate the spine and surrounding areas to relieve pressure and pain. Spinal Decompression Therapy is highly effective and can help patients to potentially avoid surgery.

Chiropractic Care Can Help You With Your Sciatica

We are a chiropractic office in Hiram, Georgia, and it is our mission to provide the best chiropractic care for our patients. We treat acute and chronic pain, auto injuries, pinched nerves, back pain, neck pain, headaches, sports injuries, sciatica, work-related injuries, and more.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica describes a condition in which pain radiates along the sciatic nerve. You can often tell if you have sciatica if the pain from your buttocks and back of your leg travels down to your foot and toes.

This condition is caused by compression of the lower back nerves that run from the spine to the leg. Keep in mind that sciatica is a symptom, not a final diagnosis.

Herniated discs that compress the sciatic nerve in the lower spine can cause this, or the pain may come from several other conditions such as osteoarthritis, narrowing of the spinal canal, spinal inflammation, spinal stenosis, and spinal tumors.

If you have been diagnosed with sciatica, you might feel like you’ve been punched in the lower back or thigh or that something is “out-of-whack.” Your back pain could be so problematic that you’ve had to stop doing everyday activities, like walking or sitting. You can also have symptoms of numbness, weakness, or tingling anywhere in your leg.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused when the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, is irritated or damaged. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down through the buttocks and down each leg to the foot. It’s made up of many individual nerve fibers that run from your spine to your legs.

Sciatica is a frequent cause of lower back pain, and it can also cause pain, numbness, stiffness, and tingling in one or both legs. Sciatica primarily affects the lower back, hips, buttocks, and legs. You may feel pain along with this nerve distribution if intervertebral discs bulge or rupture, irritating the nerve root. Sciatica can be accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in both legs.

Sciatica happens when the sciatic nerve that originates in your lower back or buttock becomes pressed, stretched, or inflamed. The results can be pain shooting down the back of one leg and into the foot, numbness on one or the other side of your body, or hip pain.

Chiropractic doctors can offer treatments and prevention tips for patients suffering from sciatica or lower back pain.

There are many benefits to seeing a chiropractor for the reduction of pain and disabilities associated with sciatica. Some of these benefits include an increased ability to move without pain and muscle spasm reduction.

Many people believe that sitting too long can cause sciatica. While some evidence supports this belief, other factors such as exercises or improper posture also play a role.

In short, without a proper diagnosis from your doctor, you should always consider the many possible causes of your sciatica before attributing it to sitting too long. Sciatica affects people of all ages and both sexes.

How to Treat Sciatica

When you’ve been diagnosed with sciatica, it is ideal to follow a particular course of action to ensure that the condition doesn’t worsen or result in a more severe issue.

The primary treatment for sciatica is chiropractic care. Chiropractors are trained in advanced treatments that can relieve pressure, irritation, and tension around the spine to restore balance and alignment. These manipulations may be applied in many different areas of the body but will most often focus on where it causes pain or discomfort.

A few ways to treat sciatica include the following: some people use at-home therapies such as ice packs or a heating pad; others take prescription medications to reduce inflammation and pain; while others might go through surgery so a doctor may alleviate any pinching on some nerves by stretching connective tissues in their spine (called a laminectomy).

But many alternatives exist for getting rid of sciatica, including chiropractic adjustments along your spine. Chiropractic care may help sciatic pain by releasing pinched nerves at the lower spine. However, other treatment methods are also available if you suffer from severe chronic low back or neck pain or leg pain that lasts longer than 12 weeks.

Chiropractic is an alternative to pain medication. Chiropractors use the method of “adjustments” to bring you relief from your pain. These adjustments can be made in a variety of ways. One successful way is using the Activator Method. With this method, our chiropractor can make adjustments using a spring-loaded tool. It has been said that these kinds of adjustments are similar to that of “going to the gym to exercise your spine.” This type of chiropractic care has helped many sciatic patients with their pain relief.

Independent testing has shown that this method provides immediate pain relief for people suffering from sciatica or other lower back pain. With this said, nothing can hold a candle to having your spine adjusted by your chiropractor. So if you suffer from back pain caused by sciatica, call the office today and schedule an appointment.

Simple Exercises for Sciatica Relief

If sciatica is making your life tough, here's some good news: certain exercises can really help! They're not just any exercises, though. We're talking about special stretches and moves that target the areas affected by sciatica. They can reduce your pain and get you moving more easily.

  • Knee-to-Chest Stretch: Lie on your back and hug one knee towards your chest. Hold it there for a bit, then switch to the other knee. It's a great way to ease that tight feeling in your lower back.
  • Seated Spinal Twist: Sit on the floor, legs stretched out. Bend one knee over the other leg and twist your body gently towards the bent knee. This twist can help loosen up your back.
  • Pelvic Tilt: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Tighten your stomach muscles and push your lower back into the floor. Hold for a few seconds, then relax. It’s like giving your back a mini-massage!

It's important to talk to your chiropractor or doctor before starting any new exercise, especially if you're dealing with pain.

Nutrition and Lifestyle for Sciatica: Foods that Fight Sciatica Pain

Believe it or not, what you eat can impact your sciatica pain. Foods rich in anti-inflammatory properties can be real superheroes in this battle. Think bright berries, leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish like salmon. They're not just tasty; they help calm down inflammation which can ease your sciatica pain.

Lifestyle Tips for Sciatica Warriors

  • Keep Moving: Sitting or standing in one spot for too long can make sciatica worse. Try to move around regularly, even if it’s just a short walk.
  • Mind Your Posture: Whether you're sitting at a desk or picking something up, good posture matters. Keeping your back straight and not slouching can really help.
  • Weight Matters: Carrying extra weight can put more pressure on your spine. Keeping a healthy weight can reduce this pressure and ease your sciatica symptoms.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water keeps everything in your body working better, including your spine and nerves.

These tips are easy to start but can make a big difference in how you feel. A healthy body is your best defense against sciatica pain!
